Lawn Tennis Meeting, Open to All Amateurs

Not Familiar ??? How about this "The Championships, Wimbledon" ? That's how they advertised the first ever Wimbledon Championship in 1877. Why Amateurs ??? The tournament was open only for the top ranked amateur players till 1968.

The Oldest Tennis Tournament in the World

The inaugural The Championships, Wimbledon tournament were held on 9th July 1877. The gentlemen's singles was the only event held at that time till 1884. In 1884, they added another two events, those were ladies singles and gentlemen's doubles, later in 1913, ladies doubles and mixed doubles events were added too.

Spencer William Gore, the winner of the first ever Wimbledon Championship in 1877 was also a first class Cricket player who played for Surrey County Cricket Club. He was 27 years old by the time he won the Wimbledon title for the very first time.

There were 22 players for the Championship and Spencer won the Gentlemen's Singles Championship by beating William Marshell on 19th July 1877. The sets scores were 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4.
